Menomonee Falls, WI May 30, 2017: How many instances have you asked a smoker “Did you know smoking can cause cancer as well as other diseases due to some toxic chemicals in them?”, and heard the reply “Wow! I had no idea, this whole time I thought they were good for me, why isn’t this information being made aware to the public!”?
Probably never. Everyone is aware of the health risks associated with smoking. Few people are aware of the radioactive gasses or toxic chemicals that lurk in their homes that are slowly decaying their health. People fail to realize that they are being poisoned. Radon, a radioactive gas that can exist in your home, is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year.
VOC stands for volatile organic compound, meaning any of several chemical additives. Levels of VOCs inside your house can increase up to 1,000 times if certain kinds of paints are used. Paint only releases half of its VOCs in the first year. There are numerous VOCs in the paint that’s known to cause cancer. Other health effects besides cancer include kidney damage, liver damage, damage to the central nervous system (including the brain), as well as minor complaints like headaches and eye, throat, and nose irritation.
Poor indoor air quality is also a major issue in homes throughout Wisconsin which can lead to musty odors and mold growth, window condensation, structural rot, peeling paint, back drafting appliances, damp basements, a build-up of ice on the roof’s edge, and high utility costs.
Cobblestone Builders, based in Menomonee Falls, WI knows all too well how important air quality is to a family.
“Mom’s today are less concerned with closet space and more concerned about proper ventilation, contaminate free materials, and the overall health of a home. As a parent, the health of your children is the highest priority. Mothers are taking a much more active role in the building process to ensure their entire home is safe,” said Dirk Wildt, President of Cobblestone Builders in Menomonee Falls.
“Cobblestone Builders makes it a high priority to limit the number of toxic chemicals in every home that we build,” says Dirk Wildt President of Cobblestone Builders. “We do so by installing radon mitigation systems, using low VOC paints, and implementing de- moisturizing mechanical ventilation systems. We build homes that adhere to some of highest possible indoor air quality standards,” Wildt Added.
“A few years ago, building green may have meant you’d be spending a notably higher amount than traditional construction. Today, we’ve gotten green building and energy efficiency built into our homes at little cost to the consumer. This gives parents peace of financial mind and allows them to trust us with the health and safety of their most precious gift – their children,” added Dirk.
